For 42 years, the only face Libyans saw looming over their future was Muammar Gaddafi.
Now the faces of thousands of candidates line the crowded streets of Tripoli - many of them women - as Libya prepares to usher in a new era of freedom with today’s election for a 200-member national assembly.
But the newly minted politicians, tasked with naming a prime minister, enacting legislation and appointing a committee to draft a constitution, will take their seats as Libya’s already fragile transition from dictatorship to democracy comes under increasing pressure from militia violence across the divided country.
